Our Services

Small Talk provides therapy services to children of all ages with various delays or disorders, including:

Articulation and Phonological Disorders

A speech sound disorder occurs when sound substitutions or distortions continue past a certain age. Speech sound disorders include difficulty with articulation (producing sounds) and phonological processes (sound patterns). Small Talk provides targeted and goal-oriented intervention to correct sounds that children have difficulty producing.

Expressive and Receptive Language Disorder

Language disorders include difficulties developing and understanding vocabulary, using appropriate grammar and sentence structure, difficulties with reading comprehension, narrative writing, and challenges with understanding concepts, following directions, and processing language. Small Talk offers individualized services based on a child’s current level of performance.

Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS)

Childhood Apraxia of Speech is a motor speech disorder. Children with CAS have difficulty saying sounds, syllables, and words, not due to muscle weakness, but the brain’s ability to plan and coordinate the movement of the lips, jaw, and tongue. Small Talk provides intervention that targets motor-planning skills in order to facilitate clear production of words of increasing length and complexity.

Executive Functioning

Executive functioning skills are what allow our brains to organize information, prioritize tasks and ideas, initiate tasks, set goals, and problem solve. We help students with reading comprehension, expression, organizing thoughts and ideas in writing, as well as other critical academic skills, such as breaking down large assignments and note taking.

Expressive and Receptive Language Delays

Expressive language refers to a child’s ability to use words, sentences, symbols, and gestures to effectively communicate wants and needs. Receptive language refers to a child’s understanding and processing of information communicated from others. Small Talk offers family-centered, play-based language therapy to help toddlers who are late talkers learn to communicate.

Autism Spectrum Disorders

Children with autism spectrum disorder often present with social-pragmatic language difficulties, such as difficulty interacting with peers, understanding emotions and feelings, and taking the perspective of others. Children with autism can also have other language-based difficulties, including following directions, understanding and asking questions, and initiating and maintaining conversations. Small Talk creates intervention plans that are individualized based on the needs of each student.

Services We Offer

Speech and Language Comprehensive Evaluation

We provide comprehensive evaluations for toddlers, preschool, and school-aged children. Evaluations consist of a combination of parent interviews, informal observation, and standardized testing. A written report will be provided detailing observations, therapy recommendations, as well as intervention plans and strategies for caregivers to help facilitate speech and language development at home.

Speech and Language Therapy

Based on the results of the speech and language evaluation, we will work with you to develop a customized therapy program to address areas of concern.  Therapy is always based on current research and is implemented with the needs and interests of our patients in mind. The duration or frequency of therapy is dependent on the needs of your child.
